SGTech Participates in the Smart China Expo for the Third Time

The opening ceremony of the Online Smart China Expo (SCE) 2020, a national-level exposition that supports the development of big data and smart technologies in Western China, was held on 15 Sep 2020. Singapore has taken up the appointment as the co-organiser of the SCE from 2020 to 2022, together with the Chongqing Municipal People’s Government. SGTech is participating in the event for the third time, which is held annually in Chongqing. Due to the current COVID-19 situation, the conference and exhibition have been brought online, with a smaller scale physical event still happening in Chongqing.

Ms Josephine Teo, Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Home Affairs, addressed the opening ceremony via video link, and highlighted that Singapore and Chongqing are working closely to promote policy innovation in facilitating cross-border data flows. The partnership will support new cross-border business opportunities and spur the use of new technologies to tackle challenges, as can be noted from this year’s 30 exhibitors on the virtual exhibition and 17 Memoranda of Understanding that were signed at the event.

Among the MOU signatories, two were a result of SGTech’s Business Matching events. More than 10 SGTech members benefited from the publicity, and the business matching through SCE 2020.

(17 MOUs were signed at the event, which was concurrently held online and physically)

The event also saw a seamlessly coordinated online-offline IDC Adoption & Sub-Forum Roundtable that comprised panellists across the two cities connected through the International Data Channel. Mr Wong Wai Meng, Chairman of SGTech and Chief Executive Officer of Keppel Data Centres Holding Pte Ltd, said that “Data connectivity is the lifeblood of companies. The IDC is China’s first international data channel that provides point to point data transmission, offering a dedicated data channel between Singapore and Chongqing. This will bring about greater convenience and more opportunities for our companies that rely on technology and internet speed for their businesses.”

The Online SCE 2020 is held from 15 to 17 Sep. You may wish to visit the Singapore Pavilion here.

(The Singapore Pavilion in the online exhibition hall will provide an important platform for Singapore firms to network with Chinese companies.)
