Data Protection in the Isolation Economy

COVID-19 has challenged businesses to adapt quickly to Working From Home (WFM). In the haste to implement WFM, Data Protection is often overlooked. SGTech invited Straits Interactive to shed light on Data Protection, help businesses understand its recent developments, common risks and how to ensure compliance to PDPA in these challenging times.

Key Takeaways for Implementation of Data Protection

Mr Alvin Toh, Chief Marketing Officer at Straits Interactive elaborated on the key differences between Privacy and Security. While Security is focussed on governing unauthorised access,  Privacy’s focus is on governing authorised access.

(For more information on Security, please refer to our seminar on Cybersecurity, also under The Isolation Economy series.)

Shift towards Accountability

Mr Toh shared that Regulators are shifting their focus from ensuring Compliance to Accountability. He listed the Top 5 questions that regulators are concerned with, and rallied businesses to think about actions they can take to demonstrate accountability.

Best Practices for Operational Compliance

Mr Toh summarised the best practices to ensure compliance with the Personal Data Protection Act. He emphasised that there are multiple funding channels and resources available to help businesses kickstart the process, and recommended that businesses leverage the COVID-19 downtime to train their employees on Data Protection through courses conducted virtually.
