Sustainable Smart Nation in the Digital World
On 6 June, the UN Global Compact Network Singapore organized a panel discussion on "Digitalisation & Sustainability" in partnership with SGTech, at the Sustainable Solutions Expo 2018.
The panel discussion explored the ways in which businesses, governments and civil society can optimise the use of technology to collectively achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Moderated by Ms. Junice Yeo, Director, Corporate Citizen South East Asia, the discussion provided a lively exchange of ideas among the panelists, including speakers from Surbana Jurong and Autodesk, both SGTech members.
"When we think about the next big chapter in humanity, it's one of urbanization."
- Joe Keen Poon, Surbana Jurong
"It's a finite planet. We must do better."
- Jake Layes, Autodesk
During the plenary session, the panelists discussed the Sustainable Development Goals as guiding principles within each organization's corporate responsibility programme. Highlighted by the speakers, was the need to adopt and use technology not only to increase sustainability of business goals, but also to enhance quality of life - a central theme to Singapore's digital transformation as a 'smart nation.'
Taking various perspectives on how digitalisation is complementary to sustainability efforts, the panelists offered inspiring case examples of how technology can be utilized to achieve the SDGs.
